The solitary motion of the heart can be found on the edge of Winter’s shadow. I seek the God in hidden landscapes of my silent soul as He sleeps and dreams me into being. The Dark Night cloaks revelation in the God’s enigmatic heart ~ Samhain meditation
It is Samhain in the Southern Hemisphere, the official beginning of the dark half of the year.
It is the day we both mourn and celebrate the final departure of summer and light.
It is the day when we honor the Dead, and all that lived in the Before.
At Samhain the veil between worlds is thin, and many things become possible as we heed the spirit of those who have gone before us.
The symbolism and significance of this day, at this time, is not lost on me.
I, too, am standing in the veil between worlds right now
I, too, am both mourning and celebrating what has been before but what is no longer.
I, too, am aware of the lessons inherent in the experiences of the past.
Personally I’ve always experienced the time between Samhain and Yule as a ‘dead zone’ – a dull and surreal time during which significant things happen while I seem to lose hold of myself a little.
A part of me seems to fall asleep in early winter, and usually only re-emerges anew in August – around Imbolc – when the light returns.
And yet,
only a couple of hours from now I will be exchanging this solemn and familiar African winter for the stirrings of a Parisian summer.
Samhain will transmute into Beltane.
Endings will change to beginnings, and the familiar will become the still-to-be-discovered.
I have been blessed with an extra boost of light this year, to combat the dark time that has just passed.
An additional period of light so that, come Imbolc, I will not only be awake, but also burst forth, and be truly alive.
The fiery God emerges from night’s embrace. Summer’s brilliant splendor blooms in His arms ~ Beltane blessing
